The History of Padel

The History of Padel

Court satisfaction is a lifestyle clothing brand entirely inspired by Padel.

What kind of sport is it?

Well let’s have a look at its history.

First of all, how do you say it? Is it padel, paddle…?

People confuse the word with paddle as stand up paddle but it’s pronounced /pa/dele/.

Legend has it that in the beginning of the century a similar sport (platform tennis) started to be played on the transatlantic trips made by the English, Argentinian and Mexican people that wanted to play tennis but as it was impossible they had to adapt it to the small space available on the boats.

But it was in 1969 that the first padel court ever to be built was by Enrique Corcuera in his house in Acapulco where he adapted a small space into the first padel court. A curious fact was that one of the back walls was only built to avoid that the padel ball went over to his neighbour’s house, turning the game quite boring with so many breaks. This really worked out quite well as we see nowadays.

The introduction of the game in other countries happened through Enrique Corcuera’s friends, like Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg that tried out the game at Enrique’s house, who immediately fell in love with this sport and decided to create the first two padel courts in Spain (in 1974), more precisely in a Tennis club in Marbella.

One year after, Julio Menditeguy, an Argentinian member of Alfonso’s Tennis Club in Marbella enjoyed the sport so much that he imported it to his homeland, which later became a success.

Spain was the country where Padel thrived more and that happened also with the help of many celebrities (including the Spanish King) that started to play the game, which became highly noticed by the press and this led to the sport’s phenomenon.

Soon many Argentinian players started to come to Spain to play the international tournaments and the rest is history.

Nowadays padel is the most growing sport in the world and the expectations are that it continues to expand.

If you still haven’t tried it ’s time to do it!
